A new study suggests that erectile dysfunction drugs like Viagra can raise the risk of heart attacks and strokes, particularly among men who have suffered an erection for over a year.
In the study published today inJAMA Internal Medicine, researchers at University Hospitals in Kampala found that men who had erectile dysfunction in the past year had a 10% lower risk of getting a stroke, compared with men who had not. They found that the risk was particularly low among men who had had an erection for more than three years.
"This is the first study to evaluate the association between erectile dysfunction and the use of Viagra, a PDE5 inhibitor," said lead author Dr. Thomas D. Johnson, Ph. D., from the University of Washington. "We are excited about our findings and look forward to initiating a collaborative study that will test the benefits of our findings for all men suffering from erectile dysfunction."
Researchers found that the risk of a stroke was reduced by more than 50% among men who had used Viagra three or more times in the past year, and by more than 90% among men who had taken it for three or more years. The researchers also found that the risk of heart attack was reduced by 50% among men who had taken Viagra three or more times in the past year.
"Our findings show that erectile dysfunction treatment with Viagra is associated with a reduced risk of heart attack, stroke, and death, particularly among men who have had an erection for more than three years," said study leader Dr. David J. R. Schondelmeyer from the University of Florida.
Johnson and his colleagues looked at records from 1,943 patients with erectile dysfunction and reported a 30-day prevalence rate of 26.8% for each patient. They used this data to predict the number of men who will die from cardiovascular disease later in the study.
The new study was published inand is expected to be published in the same journal on Tuesday.
The researchers used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which has more than 4,000 questions about health in the United States. They used a computer program to record the number of people who have taken a drug for erectile dysfunction and then compared that number to the number of men who were taking the drug for more than one year.
In the study, the researchers found that men who had taken Viagra three or more times were less likely to have a stroke, compared with those who took only one dose of the drug, and those who took Viagra three or more times were more likely to have a heart attack, compared with men who had taken the drug only three or more times.
Researchers say this is the first study to evaluate the association between Viagra and heart attacks.

Johnson and his colleagues at the University of Florida studied a group of men who were diagnosed with erectile dysfunction and had had heart attacks or strokes for more than three years.
The researchers examined 1,827 patients with erectile dysfunction and a prevalence of at least one heart attack, stroke, or other heart failure, and found that a similar number had a 30% lower risk of getting a heart attack or stroke, compared with a 20% lower risk of having a heart attack or stroke, or a 30% lower risk of having a stroke, according to the study.
They compared the number of people who had used Viagra three or more times to the number of men who had not used Viagra.
Researchers noted that Viagra is a PDE5 inhibitor, which means it allows blood to flow to the penis, allowing for an erection.
